SUMMARY:Field Trip At Abita Creek Flatwoods Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Take a morning walk through one of southeast Louisiana’s most unique ecosystems: the longleaf pine flatwoods savanna! If you’re into native plants or birds\, or want to learn more about local habitats\, this is the walk you’ve been waiting for. Guides are Will DeBravelles\, director of land protection for the Nature Conservancy in Louisiana\, and Wendy Rihner\, native plants grower\, local birder\, and Orleans Audubon Environmental Education Chair. They’ll talk native plants (including carnivorous ones) and habitat management and explain what makes this ecosystem so special (fingers crossed that we see a red-cockaded woodpecker!). Bring binoculars if you have them as well as water\, sunscreen\, bug spray\, and comfortable closed-toe shoes for the boardwalk and trails. As always\, everyone is welcome\, NPI member or not (to join NPI\, follow this link to zeffy.com; it’s the perfect way to support NPI’s mission and make events like this possible). No sign-up\, just show up at the main parking lot off LA-435. Parking is very very limited so carpooling is encouraged; be aware that you may need to find additional parking across the street from the preserve. A map and driving directions are at the preserve link above or use Google maps coordinates 30°31’02.3″N 89°58’05.2″W. Free\, but please consider donating to the Nature Conservancy to support their work.
